A New Era for Women’s Professional Hockey in Detroit
Josh Sciba, a native of Westland, Michigan, has been appointed as the head coach for PWHL Detroit, the league’s newest franchise that will begin play in the 2026‑27 season.
Sciba arrives with more than fifteen years of coaching experience, having spent two seasons as an assistant with the PWHL New York Sirens and serving as an assistant coach for the 2026 U.S. Olympic Women’s Hockey Team that captured gold.
Manon Rhéaume, the General Manager of PWHL Detroit, praised Sciba’s deep understanding of the game and his proven ability to teach, stating that his passion aligns perfectly with the club’s vision.
Expressing his excitement, Sciba said he feels honored to lead a team that represents a significant milestone for hockey in the region, and he looks forward to contributing to the growth of the sport among young athletes in Detroit.
Building on a Hockey Legacy
Detroit’s rich hockey heritage provides an inspiring backdrop for the new team, and Sciba’s local roots are expected to foster a strong connection with fans and the community.
The franchise will host its home games at Little Caesars Arena, a venue steeped in Detroit’s sporting tradition, while the team’s official name and logo are slated for release later this year.
Looking Ahead
With the league’s expansion plans and growing visibility, PWHL Detroit aims to become a cornerstone of professional women’s sports, offering competitive play and role models for the next generation.
