A New Era for Detroit Women’s Hockey
Josh Sciba, a veteran coach from Westland, Michigan, has been appointed head coach of the newly formed Detroit franchise in the Professional Women's Hockey League. Sciba brings more than fifteen years of coaching experience, having spent the last season as an assistant with the New York Sirens and helping the women's national team capture gold at the 2026 Milano Olympics.
His hiring coincides with the organization’s front‑office expansion, as Hall‑of‑Fame goaltender Manon Rheaume has been named general manager. Rheaume will oversee roster construction ahead of the expansion draft scheduled for June 17 at Detroit's Fox Theatre.
The franchise will make its home at Little Caesars Arena, with league officials targeting a late November to early December 2026 debut. The arena, already a basketball and hockey hub, is expected to provide a marquee setting for the league's growing fan base.
Sciba's background includes a stint as an assistant coach for the PWHL’s New York Sirens, where he contributed to a championship‑contending squad. His deep roots in Michigan and extensive coaching résumé position him as a natural leader for a team that aims to blend competitive edge with community engagement.
Milestones on the Ice
The upcoming expansion draft will finalize the roster, marking a pivotal moment for the franchise as it assembles talent that could shape the next era of women's professional hockey.
