Defending Champions Gear Up for Another Run
The JSerra High School flag football squad entered the 2025 season with a perfect 28‑0 record, capping the year with a last‑second victory over Orange Lutheran in the Division 1 final. Coach Brian Ong, the reigning Southern Section Division 1 coach of the year, guided the team to a dominant performance that left rivals scrambling for answers.
Returning talent gives the team a strong foundation for 2026. Kate Meier and Tessa Russell, both members of the USA Flag junior national team, are back alongside All‑American quarterback Ava Van Heerde, who rotated with Meier last season. Dual‑threat quarterback Kendra Hansen also returns after a sophomore campaign that produced 25 touchdown passes and 20 rushing scores.
The roster picture is shifting, however. Star receiver Ava Irwin transferred to Sierra Canyon, where she will help launch the program’s flag football team. Meanwhile, Orange Lutheran will lose two All‑CIF players, Makena Cook and Happy Dubois, to the same school, a move that could reshape the competitive balance in the division.
New Rules and Schedule Implications
Adding to the intrigue, Orange Lutheran hired Dennis Hester as head coach after Kristen Sherman departed to assist her husband at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. New 2026 rule changes — including extra timeouts, stricter ball‑stripping regulations, and a fourth‑and‑20 pass option for trailing teams — are expected to influence game strategy across the Southern Section.
The Chargers x Oakley Invitational, scheduled for Costa Mesa, will showcase many of the region’s top programs, including JSerra and Huntington Beach. Other contenders such as Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar and Sierra Canyon are also set to feature in the early‑season showcase, promising a deep field of competition as the new season unfolds.
