A Fresh Coaching Direction
Juan Roman has been named the new head coach of the girls' soccer program at Pajaro Valley High School, taking over from Kristian Flores, who led the team to a Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division title last season.
Roman previously steered the boys' varsity squad until 2020 and has continued to serve as an assistant coach, giving him an intimate understanding of the school's athletic landscape. He also spent two years coaching girls' soccer at Rolling Hills Middle School, experience he says equips him to nurture the next generation of players.
Focus on Participation and Positivity
Beyond tactics, Roman's primary objective is to increase participation rates that have waned in recent seasons. In some training sessions this year, only nine girls showed up, a figure that underscores the need for a welcoming environment. He emphasizes motivation, a positive attitude, and encouraging athletes to compete at their own level, rather than fixating on outcomes.
Athletic director Joe Manfre voiced confidence in Roman's leadership, citing his extensive coaching background and the continuity he will bring to a program that has seen frequent turnover in recent years. Manfre believes the new structure will stabilize the team and foster long‑term growth.
The appointment comes at a time when the school district is looking to reinvigorate its sports offerings across the board. With the support of the administration and the surrounding community, Roman aims to build a sustainable pipeline of talent and enthusiasm for girls' soccer at Pajaro Valley High.
