A Rocky Start Turns Into a Test of Grit
Vijay Wallace, a junior guard for Arizona State, broke his left fibula during an exhibition game, a blow that could have ended his season before it truly began.
A Houston team physician was on hand and reset the fractured bone on the spot, buying Wallace precious time for surgery just days later.
Wallace spent nearly two months on crutches before graduating to a walking boot and eventually a scooter, yet he never left the sidelines.
His parents and sister made regular visits, offering both emotional support and practical help as he navigated the painful recovery.
Even as he healed, Wallace traveled with the Sun Devils on road trips, soaking in the atmosphere of upcoming Big 12 contests and keeping his spirits high.
Choosing to Stay Amid Change
When a coaching change reshaped the staff, Wallace chose to remain with Arizona State, eager to prove his worth under the new leadership.
Coach Randy Bennett, who had met Wallace via Zoom after the hiring, praised the player’s positive attitude and relentless work ethic during those early workouts.
Bennett approached Wallace’s first sessions cautiously, aware of the recent surgery, but the guard’s determination shone through as he worked out with the new staff.
Now cleared for normal activity at the close of the season, Wallace looks to carve out a role in Bennett’s system, confident that his 6‑foot‑5 frame and versatility can find a place on the court.
