The Colorado Avalanche announced this week that Jussi Ahokas will take the reins of their AHL affiliate, the Colorado Eagles, as head coach. The move comes as the franchise looks to sharpen its player‑development engine while maintaining a winning culture in the American Hockey League.
Ahokas, a Finnish native, arrives with a résumé that includes multiple championship‑winning stints in both Finland and North America. His reputation rests on a blend of tactical acumen and an ability to nurture young prospects into top‑level performers.
A Coaching Journey Across Continents
Before joining the Eagles, Ahokas guided the Kitchener Rangers to a Memorial Cup title in the 2024‑25 season and was named OHL Coach of the Year for his efforts. The following year he captured Coach of the Year honors in Finland’s Liiga while leading KooKoo Kouvola to the league’s best record.
His Liiga experience also includes a runner‑up finish with TPS Turku in 2022, where he coached forward Juraj Slafkovsky, who would later be selected first overall in the NHL draft. Internationally, Ahokas has tasted success with Finland’s U18 and U20 national teams, winning gold at the 2016 World Under‑18 Championships and the 2019 World Junior Championships.
The Colorado Eagles, who reached the Western Conference Final under former coach Mark Letestu, will now aim to build on that momentum with Ahokas at the helm. Letestu has since transitioned to an assistant coaching role with the Vegas Golden Knights, clearing the path for Ahokas to shape the team’s direction.
Ahokas’s mandate extends beyond merely winning games; he will focus on developing NHL‑ready talent that can eventually join stars such as Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar in Colorado’s quest for a Stanley Cup.
