A Strategic Shift in the Oklahoma Program
Oklahoma has announced the appointment of Justin Smith as its new head athletic trainer, a move that comes as the program seeks to overhaul its medical and player development infrastructure.
Smith arrives after a decade‑plus tenure at North Carolina State, where he served as head trainer from 2015 onward, and a prior stint at Appalachian State from 2007 to 2014, giving him a blend of experience across different collegiate environments.
A Proven Track Record
Athletic director Brent Venables highlighted Smith’s reputation for medical acumen, leadership on the sidelines and the ability to communicate effectively with coaches and players about recovery timelines.
The hiring follows a series of injury setbacks that plagued the Sooners during their inaugural season in the SEC, a period that exposed vulnerabilities in the team’s conditioning and rehabilitation protocols.
Looking Ahead
By bringing in a trainer with a track record of managing large squads and integrating modern recovery techniques, Oklahoma hopes to reduce downtime and keep its talent on the field for more of the season.
The transition also marks the third consecutive year that the training staff has been reshaped, underscoring the administration’s commitment to aligning resources with the demands of top‑level competition.
