The University of Virginia announced this week that Justin Speros has been named the new general manager of the Cavaliers' football program, filling the vacancy left by Tyler Jones, who departed for a senior role at Stanford.
Speros, a Virginia native who joined the program in 2022, has spent the past several years immersed in player evaluation, acquisition and roster management, building a reputation as a meticulous scout and strategist.
His ascent began with a stint as a recruiting assistant after graduating from Clemson University in 2017, where he also served as an undergraduate assistant under head coach Dabo Swinney and worked closely with current UVA coach Tony Elliott.
Elliott recalled that early collaboration when he elevated Speros to director of scouting and later to director of recruiting, roles that expanded his influence over the team's personnel strategy.
In July, Speros was promoted to assistant general manager and, shortly thereafter, received the additional title of chief of staff, consolidating his authority over the player personnel department and roster construction.
Speaking about the appointment, Elliott said he has always trusted Speros's eye for talent and his deep understanding of the program's culture, adding that the new general manager is poised to help the Cavaliers compete at a higher level.
Jones, who had overseen the transition from a player‑development perspective, left for Stanford where he will serve as chief operating officer of athletics, marking a significant shift for both programs.
Speros, who earned his bachelor's degree from Clemson and previously interned with the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars, expressed gratitude to Dr. Williams and Coach Elliott for the opportunity to serve the university he grew up watching.
His responsibilities now span roster management, high school and transfer evaluations, and oversight of the entire player personnel operation, tasks that will shape the team's composition for the upcoming seasons.
The move reflects a broader trend of internal promotions within collegiate football programs, where continuity and shared vision are increasingly valued over external hires.
Looking Ahead
With Speros at the helm, the Cavaliers aim to leverage their accumulated scouting data and player relationships to close the gap with traditional powerhouses, a strategy that could reshape the competitive landscape of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
