Justin Thomas, a former Division II standout, entered his first season at Ball State with the expectation of becoming the Cardinals’ top edge rusher.
A injury that nearly ended a career
During preseason practice he suffered a complete tibia and partial fibula fracture, an injury that not only halted his 2024 campaign but also threatened to end his college football journey.
Staying the course
When the previous coaching staff was dismissed, Thomas chose to remain, citing the support of new head coach Mike Uremovich and defensive coordinator Jeff Knowles as a decisive factor in his decision.
A new defensive identity
Now in his final college season, Thomas is slated to anchor a revamped defensive line, sharing the edge with recruits such as Jared Badie, Layton Starks, Sam Feeney, Ben Marsh, George Okorie, Maverick Gracio and Austin Stief, a group tasked with bolstering both pass rush and run defense.
Leadership in a changing landscape
Beyond statistics, Thomas has taken on a mentorship role, guiding younger teammates and helping shape a culture of hard work and accountability. Defensive line coach Adam Siwicki has praised Thomas’s influence, noting that his presence has been pivotal during the transition, especially after Nathan Voorhis departed for the New York Jets.
