A New Era for Outdoor Hockey in Kalamazoo
On January 31, 2027, the Kalamazoo Wings will square off against the Toledo Walleye on the frozen expanse of Western Michigan University’s Waldo Stadium, turning the campus into a winter arena for professional hockey.
Toni Will, general manager and governor of the K‑Wings, described the contest as a celebration of the unique hockey community that has flourished in Kalamazoo for decades, emphasizing the event’s role in spotlighting the sport’s growing footprint across the region.
The game will mark the second outdoor regular‑season hockey contest ever held in Michigan, following the historic outdoor matchup at Michigan Stadium in Detroit back in 2014, and it will be the first such event staged at a college venue.
Waldo Stadium, best known for its Broncos football tradition and named in honor of the university’s founding president Dwight B. Waldo, will provide a distinctive backdrop that blends collegiate spirit with professional competition.
Looking ahead, the Broncos and the K‑Wings plan to relocate to the newly under‑construction Kalamazoo Event Center once it opens in the fall, a move that promises upgraded facilities while preserving the tradition of outdoor heritage games.
