A Milestone on the Ice
The Kalamazoo Wings are set to make history on January 31, 2027, when they bring professional hockey outdoors for the first time in Kalamazoo, transforming Waldo Stadium into a winter arena under the open sky.
The Toledo Walleye will be the opposition, a team the Wings have already bested twice at Toledo’s Fifth Third Field, adding a layer of rivalry that promises extra intensity to the spectacle.
Beyond the game, the event is embedded in a larger plan to develop hockey in the region. Starting in 2027, the Kalamazoo Event Center will serve as a shared hub for both Western Michigan University’s college program and the professional Wings, fostering collaboration and year‑round ice time.
Toni Will, general manager and governor of the Kalamazoo Wings, highlighted the significance of the occasion, noting that the game is about more than competition — it is about creating unforgettable experiences that bring the community together.
The outdoor contest follows a day earlier when Western Michigan’s men’s hockey team hosts the University of Michigan at the same venue, underscoring the growing prominence of college hockey in the state and setting the stage for a weekend that blends tradition with innovation.
