A new chapter for youth soccer
The Kansas City Public School District announced this week that it will roll out a Soccer in Schools program across its elementary campuses, aiming to give every youngster a first taste of the game while teaching teamwork and discipline.
Backed by a coalition that includes Bank of America, the national governing body U.S. Soccer and the district itself, the initiative equips physical‑education teachers with a ready‑made curriculum, drills and the gear needed to run lessons on the field.
Around twenty teachers recently gathered for a hands‑on training session, where they learned new strategies for introducing soccer basics and integrating them into existing PE classes.
Matt Linski, president of Bank of America’s Kansas City market, said the program was sparked by the excitement of the recent World Cup and is meant to bridge neighborhoods and classrooms through the universal language of sport.
Nyala Bulock, assistant district athletic director, noted that the teachers’ enthusiasm has been palpable, with many already planning how to weave soccer into their lesson plans to foster soft‑skill development beyond the game.
District officials say the effort will continue to supply schools with equipment as needed, ensuring that financial barriers do not limit participation, and they hope the model can be replicated in other districts across the region.
