Organized by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District in partnership with the Ethnic Enrichment Commission of Kansas City, the event merges sport with international food vendors, live music and cultural exchange.
Players such as Orlando Cachiguango, who will captain Team Ecuador, and Guenel Raphael of Cameroon see the tournament as more than a game. For them, stepping onto the field feels like representing their homelands and forging new friendships across continents.
Soccer as a Bridge
Raphael has described the Unity Cup as a “mini World Cup,” saying the experience of playing in front of a diverse crowd makes him feel truly alive. Andrea Khan, alternate commissioner for Kenya with the Ethnic Enrichment Commission, illustrated how a simple mango drink can spark conversation and deepen cultural connections among attendees.

Beyond the matches, visitors can sample cuisine from at least eight countries, enjoy performances and witness the camaraderie that transcends borders. Free admission ensures the family‑friendly event is accessible to all, and organizers envision the Unity Cup growing into an annual celebration of sport and culture.
Local partners, including Capitol Federal, have pledged their support, underscoring the tournament’s role as a community‑building initiative that blends athletic competition with cultural enrichment.
