Kansas head coach Lance Leipold has put forward a daring proposal to relocate the state high school football championship games to the campuses of the University of Kansas and Kansas State University.
Currently, the championship finals are held at smaller facilities such as Emporia State University and Hutchinson Community College, while earlier rounds remain on high school fields.
Alternating Venues and Division II Involvement
Leipold envisions a rotating host‑site system that would be tied to the location of the annual Sunflower Showdown between KU and K-State, and he has suggested that Division II schools could help run some of the semifinal matches.
He also stresses the importance of synchronizing the schedule with the Big 12 Conference to avoid clashes with regular‑season games, ensuring that the new arrangement does not create scheduling conflicts.
The idea builds on a section within the David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium that already honors past high school football state champions, reflecting Leipold’s pride in showcasing those achievements on a larger stage.
