Speaking to a packed room of reporters, Leipold emphasized that the Jayhawks are determined to reverse that trend and reclaim the momentum they enjoyed in the 2022 and 2023 campaigns.
Rebuilding the Offense
The conversation quickly turned to the players who could make the difference this year. Redshirt junior running back Yasin Willis, who transferred from Syracuse, was highlighted as a cornerstone of the offense. Willis arrived in Lawrence after leading the Orange in rushing yards last season, bringing a blend of size, physicality and downhill running that coaches say fits the Kansas scheme perfectly.
Associate head coach Andy Kotelnicki, who will share play‑calling duties with Willis, expressed excitement about the new dynamic. He noted that having a back who can handle a heavy workload opens up more creative options in the backfield and allows the offense to stay balanced.
Adding to the mix is junior running back Dylan Edwards, a transfer from Kansas State who brings a different skill set. Edwards’ speed and agility are expected to complement Willis’ power running, giving the Jayhawks multiple threats on every down.
One of the most anticipated fixtures on the schedule is a September 19 showdown with Arizona State in London. Leipold framed the international game as a positive opportunity, even as he acknowledged the logistical hurdles of crossing time zones and readjusting after the match.
Beyond the marquee matchup, Leipold believes the depth of the roster is stronger than in recent years. He pointed out that the competition for the second spot on the depth chart is the closest it has ever been, suggesting that the team’s overall competitiveness could translate into surprise performances against opponents who underestimate the Jayhawks.
