Kansas football has landed a commitment from three‑star safety Braiden Graves, a 6‑foot, 190‑pound prospect out of Cypress, Texas. Graves, ranked No. 49 at his position and No. 71 overall in the state, announced his decision on Tuesday, selecting the Jayhawks over offers from Texas Tech, SMU and TCU.
A versatile defensive addition
His pledge marks the first defensive player to join Kansas’ 2027 recruiting class, which now stands at five members and is positioned No. 7 within the Big 12 and No. 46 nationally. The class has quickly risen in prominence as the coaching staff continues to build momentum heading into the next cycle.
Graves capped a standout junior season with 97 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, eight pass breakups and seven sacks, numbers that also included a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. Those statistics underscore a blend of aggression and playmaking that aligns with the demands of the ‘hawk’ position.
Defensive coordinator D.K. McDonald has described the ‘hawk’ role as requiring a player who can be physical enough to stop the run yet quick enough to drop back into coverage. Graves’ size, speed and tackling ability make him a natural fit for that hybrid responsibility.
Beyond football, Graves is a multi‑sport athlete whose track team captured the 2026 district championship. His speed on the track could translate into immediate impact on the defensive side of the ball, and early enrollment suggests he may see playing time as a freshman during the 2027‑28 season.
