Alaska Anchorage’s men’s basketball program has secured a new scholarship athlete, Karim Elgizawy, who will don the Seawolves’ jersey for the upcoming season. The announcement comes as the team looks to bolster its roster under head coach Cameron Turner.
Elgizawy arrives after a standout stint at Laramie County Community College in Wyoming, where he averaged 12.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. His sophomore year included 20 games with double‑digit scoring and helped the team capture the NJCAA Region 9 North Division title.
A Milestone for Diversity
Before college, the Egyptian guard spent a season at Tarleton State, contributing 1.9 points and 1.2 rebounds per game in NCAA Division I. Turner first noticed Elgizawy in 2019 while the player represented Egypt at the FIBA World Championships, a moment that sparked the coach’s interest.
Elgizawy’s international experience also includes a key role on Egypt’s U‑18 squad that won the 2022 continental championship and a spot on the senior national team at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, where he was the youngest participant. His diverse background adds a global dimension to the Seawolves’ culture.
The signing marks a milestone for the program, as Elgizawy will become the first African basketball player in Seawolves history. Turner emphasized that the player’s work ethic and versatility fit the team’s vision, and fans can expect an exciting addition to the lineup.
The arrival of an African‑born athlete reflects the growing reach of the Seawolves’ recruiting footprint, which now spans continents. It also aligns with the university’s broader commitment to inclusive excellence, a value shared by partner institutions such as Alaska Anchorage and its sister campuses.
