A Strategic Choice for the Program
Great Falls Public Schools announced on Tuesday that Kassie Dixon has been selected as the new head coach of the varsity girls basketball program, marking a new chapter for the Bison.
Dixon arrives after a distinguished playing and coaching résumé that includes three state Class C championships as a player‑coach under Jeff Graham, two seasons at Sheridan College and a final year at Black Hills State University, where she completed her collegiate career.
Her four‑year stint as an assistant with the Bison has given her intimate knowledge of the program’s culture and its student‑athletes, a factor the district highlighted in its press release.
Dixon will replace Jerry Schmitz, who stepped down after eleven seasons, and the district cited her passion for basketball and commitment to developing young women as key reasons for the appointment.
Athletic director Mark Thompson said the hiring reflects a blend of proven success and deep roots in the community, noting that Dixon’s vision aligns with the district’s emphasis on academic excellence and athletic achievement.
The transition comes as the Bison look to build on recent competitive performances, with players and parents expressing optimism about the new leadership.
Dixon’s appointment also underscores the district’s investment in home‑grown talent, as she progressed from a standout high school player to a coach who has mentored multiple state championship teams.
