Kate Leary Returns to Boston College as Assistant Coach

A look at her playing legacy, coaching journey, and what she brings to the Eagles

Eagles Welcome Leary Back as Assistant Coach

In June 2023, Kate Leary stepped into a new role as an assistant coach for the Boston College women's ice hockey program, bringing a blend of playing experience and coaching acumen to the staff.

Leary's journey to the Eagles' bench began long before the summer of 2023. A native of Walpole, Massachusetts, she starred for Boston College across four seasons, contributing to four NCAA Tournament appearances and honing a reputation as a tenacious forward.

After college, she took her game professional, competing in the Canadian Women's Hockey League, the Swiss Women's League with Hockey Club Ladies Lugano, and later in the National Women's Hockey League with the Boston Blades and the Metropolitan Riveters.

Her breakout season came in 2019‑20, when she was recognized as the NWHL's Newcomer of the Year while suiting up for the Riveters, a testament to her immediate impact after joining the league.

Beyond the rink, Leary pursued academic excellence, earning dual bachelor's degrees in Applied Psychology and Human Development and in History, followed by a master's degree in Sports Administration from Boston College in 2021.

Her coaching résumé includes a stint as head coach of the Walpole Express junior team during the 2019‑20 season, as well as previous roles at Merrimack College and St. Anselm's Abbey, where she refined her tactical insights and player development skills.

Now, as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Leary hopes to translate her on‑ice experience into mentorship for the next generation of Eagles, emphasizing both competitive drive and scholarly achievement.
