A Milestone in Motorsports
British driver Katherine Legge, 45, is preparing to undertake a rare feat in American motorsport: she will contest both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca‑Cola 600 on the same day, a challenge known colloquially as the ‘Double’.
Legge will drive for the HMD Motorsports entry fielded under the e.l.f. Cosmetics banner, a partnership that marks the brand’s first foray into top‑level open‑wheel competition. The deal was announced by BRANDed Management, the agency that will coordinate her schedule.
If successful, she will become the first woman, the oldest competitor, and the first non‑American to attempt the ‘Double’, a milestone that adds to a lineage of drivers such as Robbie Gordon, Kurt Busch and Kyle Larson who have previously tried the grueling back‑to‑back format.
Legge’s best result at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to date is a 22nd‑place finish in 2012, and she most recently placed 29th in the 2024 Indy 500 after starting 33rd. Her recent NASCAR Cup Series outing at Watkins Glen saw her finish 35th, underscoring the physical toll the back‑to‑back weekend will exact.
The logistics are daunting. After the Indy 500 concludes in early May, Legge will board a commercial flight to Charlotte, North Carolina, where the Coca‑Cola 600 begins later that evening. She has spoken openly about the mental strain of constant travel, the need to stay sharp behind the wheel, and the excitement of pushing perceived limits.
Team principal Andy O’Gara will oversee her Indianapolis effort, while veteran crew chief Davey Jones has been tapped to guide her through the Charlotte race. Both have expressed confidence in her preparation, noting that the experience could redefine how sponsors view female drivers in motorsport.
Legge herself has emphasized that she wants to be judged first and foremost as a race‑car driver. “I’m here to compete on merit,” she said in a pre‑race interview, adding that the historic nature of the attempt is a bonus rather than the primary motivation.
