Katherine Murphy, a 19‑year‑old from Belmont, never imagined she would step onto a professional diamond, yet the New York Heights drafted her as an outfielder just days before the league’s first games. When a last‑minute vacancy arose, she answered the call, boarding a train to Springfield, Illinois, to join the inaugural roster.
The Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL) opened its season at Robin Roberts Stadium, a venue built to seat 5,200 fans. More than 5,000 spectators filled the stands for the opening contest, a turnout that signaled growing enthusiasm for women’s baseball. In exchange for her contract, Murphy receives a modest salary and the league covers her lodging in a shared hotel, along with some meals.
Katie Reynolds, another Belmont High School graduate, was selected 68th overall by the San Francisco Firebells but was not signed, leaving her without a roster spot. She now trains with the Belmont After School Enrichment Collaborative (BASEC), throwing regularly and keeping her skills sharp while awaiting another chance.
Only about half of the 120 players drafted found places on teams, a reality that underscores both the promise and the challenge of the new league. For Reynolds, Murphy’s presence on the field offers a tangible example that a draft pick can indeed become a player, fueling her own perseverance.
Murphy, who studies business at the University of Maryland, will return to campus for her sophomore year after the WPBL season concludes in early September. Her experience illustrates how professional opportunities can coexist with academic pursuits.
The league plans to shift its franchises to home markets next year, a move that could further embed teams in their communities.
