Kaylah Thornton, a standout guard from Fairmont, has been crowned the 2026 Penn Station Athlete of the Year, a honor that caps a senior season that will be remembered as one of the most dominant in Ohio girls basketball history.
Thornton led the Firebirds to a perfect 28‑0 record, securing back‑to‑back Great Western Ohio Conference titles and a state championship that was decided in dramatic overtime. Her statistical line — averaging 18.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 4.2 steals per game — paired with a 48.5 % field‑goal percentage, 28.4 % from three and a 72.7 % free‑throw rate, placed her among the most efficient players in the state.
A Season Defined by Excellence
The championship game unfolded as a thriller against Princeton, with Thornton hitting a clutch three‑pointer in the final seconds to force overtime. She then contributed crucial points in the extra period, helping her team clinch the title in a tightly contested finish that showcased her poise under pressure.
Beyond the numbers, Thornton’s impact resonated in the record books. She surpassed former WNBA player Kathryn Westbeld to become Fairmont’s all‑time leading scorer, a milestone that underscores the longevity of her contribution to the program.
Committed to continuing her career at the University of Akron, Thornton will join a program known for developing talent. Her senior year not only earned her the Penn Station honor but also earned her accolades as the 2025‑26 GWOC Player of the Year, Southwest District Division 1 Player of the Year and an Ohio Ms. Basketball finalist.
