The Kell Longhorns baseball team etched a historic milestone this spring, capturing the program’s first-ever state championship in dramatic fashion. The victory, achieved at AdventHealth Stadium in Rome, Georgia, was the culmination of a journey marked by perseverance, strategic adjustments, and unwavering community support.
A Season of Trials
At the outset of the 2026 campaign, the Longhorns entered the playoffs as the fourth seed in Region 6‑4A with a 17‑13 record, having endured four consecutive defeats that tested the squad’s resolve. Head Coach Todd Harris openly acknowledged the tough non‑region schedule that had left the team bruised but not broken.
The turning point arrived when the Longhorns swept East Forsyth, Cartersville and North Oconee, each victory building momentum toward the championship series. Their methodical approach and growing confidence set the stage for a showdown that would finally put the school on the map.
In the finals, the Longhorns faced North Oconee in a best‑of‑two series that went the distance. Junior pitcher Dom Consolino delivered a complete game in the opener, throwing 83 pitches with 55 strikes, while Georgia Tech commit Evan Brand followed with a 100‑pitch effort in the second contest. The team secured a 3‑2 win in the first game and an 8‑5 victory in the second, sealing the title with a combined display of poise and power.
Coach Harris emphasized the team’s resilience, noting that the ability to learn from setbacks was a defining characteristic. Athletic Director Oneisha Young echoed the sentiment, highlighting how the Longhorns “beat the odds” and inspired classmates, families, and alumni alike.
The championship has already resonated beyond the diamond, positioning the Kell program as a benchmark for future teams. As the community celebrates this landmark achievement, the Longhorns look ahead with optimism, confident that the lessons of this historic season will shape a bright future.
