Kemari Copeland, a Virginia Beach native and former All‑ACC defensive tackle, has announced his return to Virginia Tech for the 2026 season. The decision caps a whirlwind recruitment journey that saw the player weigh offers from the NFL draft and transfers to other programs.
A Coach’s Unique Bond
What set Virginia Tech apart was the personal attention Copeland received from head coach Brent Pry. During his time at Iowa Western Community College, Pry was the only coach to visit him in person, forging a relationship that would become the cornerstone of Copeland’s ultimate choice.
Copeland explained that the trust placed in him by Pry, combined with the prospect of competing in the ACC, outweighed the allure of entering the NFL draft early or seeking a fresh start elsewhere. "I wanted to be somewhere I could grow, both on and off the field," he said.
Adding Weight, Adding Purpose
In a bid to elevate his game, Copeland has bulked up to 300 pounds under the guidance of head coach James Franklin. The added mass is intended to increase his durability and disrupt opposing offenses more effectively.
Franklin, who previously advised Copeland on strength training, believes the new physique will translate into greater production on the defensive line. "When you can hold your ground at that weight, you become a different kind of problem for opposing quarterbacks," Franklin noted.
