A Strategic Addition to the Sooners' Scouting Department
The University of Oklahoma announced this week that Ken Guthrie will step into the role of assistant director of scouting and player personnel, a move that underscores the program’s ambition to deepen its talent pipeline.
Guthrie arrives after a distinguished tenure scouting for both the New York Mets and the Baltimore Orioles, where he helped uncover prospects who would later shine in the All-Star Futures Game and become top draft picks, including outfielder Heston Kjerstad and second baseman Jackson Holliday.
A Legacy of Talent Discovery
During his time with the Mets and Orioles, Guthrie’s eye for emerging talent was evident in the way he identified and signed players who would later compete on national stages, a skill set that aligns perfectly with Oklahoma’s growing reputation.
His appointment comes as the program navigates the departure of former assistant coach Todd Butler, a loss that left a noticeable gap in the coaching staff. Guthrie’s expertise is expected to not only replace that gap but also to elevate the overall scouting framework.
The Sooners have also welcomed Tyler Johnson, son of longtime coach Skip Johnson, into an assistant coaching role, further enriching the staff with familial connections to the program’s history.
Athletic director Joe Castiglione praised the new hires, noting that the blend of Guthrie’s scouting background and Johnson’s coaching experience will strengthen the team’s competitiveness in the Big 12 and beyond.
