Kent State University’s men’s basketball program has opened a new chapter with the official welcome of Alex, a recruit from Team IMPACT, a U.S. nonprofit that pairs children battling serious illnesses with college athletic teams. The Akron native will join the Golden Flashes for the upcoming season, taking part in practices, games and team events as an official member of the roster.
A New Chapter for the Golden Flashes
Team IMPACT, founded in 2011, has built a two‑year program that uses sport as a catalyst for emotional healing, skill development and resilience among children facing chronic or life‑threatening conditions. Since forming a partnership with Kent State in 2018, the collaboration has reached more than 95,000 student‑athletes nationwide, matching over 3,800 children with more than 800 colleges in all 50 states.
Alex’s integration into the Kent State men’s basketball squad is more than a roster addition; it embodies the program’s mission to foster belonging and empowerment for youth confronting health challenges. By attending practices, competing in games and participating in team activities, Alex will experience the camaraderie and support that the partnership seeks to provide.
The therapeutic benefits of the partnership extend beyond the court. Through regular interaction with college athletes, children like Alex gain mentorship, a sense of normalcy and confidence that can aid their healing journey, while the broader community witnesses the power of sport to inspire hope and solidarity.
Currently, Team IMPACT maintains a waiting list of more than 1,200 teams eager to match with children aged five to sixteen across the country, underscoring the sustained demand for this life‑affirming program.
Kent State’s ongoing collaboration with Team IMPACT exemplifies how collegiate athletics can serve as a conduit for social good, reinforcing the university’s commitment to holistic student development and community outreach.
