Kent State Soccer Opens Season with 3-0 Win Over Cleveland State

Freshmen lead the charge as the Flashes dominate early-season matchup

Kent State Soccer opened its season with a convincing 3-0 victory over Cleveland State, extending a streak of four consecutive season-opening wins.

Freshman forward Lila Simon broke the deadlock in the 30th minute, and senior Samantha Miller’s corner kick was deflected before Simon added the clean-up goal to put the Flashes ahead 1-0.

Abby Breitschuch doubled the lead with a header off a pass from senior Allison Burkey in the 66th minute, while Mia McLean Mercier and Maya Justice combined for the third goal in the closing stages.

The Flashes controlled the match with 14 shots to Cleveland State’s 10 and out-cornered the Vikings 11-3, while goalkeepers Emma Klein and Leah Shaffer combined for five saves.

Looking Ahead

Kent State will next travel to Lexington, Kentucky, to face a Southeastern Conference opponent on Sunday at 1 p.m., aiming to carry the early momentum into conference play.
