The University of Kentucky and Gonzaga University announced that they will discontinue the remaining two contests of their six‑year men's basketball series, effectively ending the agreement two years ahead of schedule.
A Rivalry That Spanned the Country
Since its inception in Spokane in 2022, the series has taken fans to Lexington, Seattle, Nashville and other venues, with each meeting billed as a marquee nonconference showdown. The most recent encounter in Nashville ended in a 94‑59 Gonzaga victory, marking the Wildcats' largest margin of defeat since the probation‑depleted team of 1990.
Both programs cited a need to reevaluate future scheduling priorities, including conference commitments and other nonconference opportunities, as the driving force behind the decision. Kentucky indicated that it will reveal details about its 2026‑27 slate at a later date.
What This Means for the Programs
The move allows each school to reshape its calendar, potentially opening slots for new opponents or tournaments that align with their strategic goals. While the series will be missed by neutral‑site enthusiasts, both coaches expressed confidence that the adjustment will ultimately benefit their respective programs.
