Kentucky Baseball Looks to Strengthen Lineup for 2027 Season

Returning stars and new draft picks aim to bolster pitching staff

A Revamped Roster

Kentucky’s baseball program is entering the 2027 season with a sense of optimism after a productive 2026 MLB Draft. The combination of returning veterans and fresh draft talent creates a foundation for a strong offensive attack.

A core group of players is set to return, including outfielder Hudson Brown, leadoff man Jayce Tharnish and power hitter Ethan Hindle. Their experience and proven production give the lineup a solid backbone heading into the new year.

The draft also delivered fresh talent, highlighted by Tyler Bell, who was selected second overall by the Colorado Rockies, and a series of late‑round surprises such as Connor Mattison and Cooper Corkrean. These additions add depth and versatility to the squad.

While the offense looks poised to be potent, the pitching staff faces a rebuilding challenge after the loss of right‑hander Jaxon Jelkin and several other arms. The departure leaves a void that the coaching staff is eager to fill.

Nevertheless, the staff has secured commitments from Grayson Willoughby, who withdrew from the draft to remain on the mound staff for the next two years, and from Ethan Hindle, who confirmed his return to bolster the lineup both offensively and defensively.

Projected starters in the batting order include Tharnish, Braxton Van Cleave, Brown and Hindle at the top, with Riley Jackson emerging as the early favorite for the catching role and Alex Kelsey slated to provide speed at the bottom of the lineup.

The pitching rotation will feature Nate Harris, Ben Cleaver and PJ Craig, while newcomer Owen Lee, a transfer from Tennessee Tech, adds left‑handed depth at shortstop and brings additional power to the defense.

Program officials say the ultimate goal is to blend a strong offensive lineup with a revitalized pitching staff, positioning Kentucky as a contender in the upcoming season.
