A challenging road ahead
The University of Kentucky has announced an expanded slate for the 2026‑27 men’s basketball season, adding a series of non‑conference contests that promise to test the Wildcats early and often.
An exhibition matchup against Little Rock will feature former Wildcat Travis Ford taking the reins as head coach for the Little Rock program, adding a narrative twist to the preseason meeting.
The regular season will also see Kentucky travel to face Appalachian State on December 5, a game that forms part of a broader non‑conference schedule that includes Kansas, Indiana, Virginia, Louisville and North Carolina.
Rankings released by CBS Sports and ESPN place Kentucky at No. 16 and No. 17 respectively, reflecting both the program’s pedigree and the tough competition it will encounter.
Among the key returnees are sharpshooter Milan Momcilovic, who has been recognized as one of the nation’s top three‑point threats, and center Malachi Moreno, whose presence in the paint is expected to anchor the defense.
The SEC slate remains formidable, with games against traditional powers such as Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt, as well as high‑profile matchups versus Florida and Texas.
Coach Mark Pope, who took over the program last season, will rely on a blend of veteran leadership and fresh talent as the Wildcats aim to translate early‑season challenges into a strong finish.
