Remembering Nic 'Big Happ' Smith
The Kentucky Wildcats football family is in mourning after the sudden passing of redshirt freshman defensive lineman Nic Smith, who died at the age of 20. Tributes have poured in from teammates, coaches and fellow students, who recall a player whose smile was as consistent as his work ethic.
Smith hailed from Loganville, Georgia, and was pursuing a degree in Community Leadership and Development within the Martin‑Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. Those who knew him described him as happy, friendly and nice, qualities that endeared him to peers both on and off the field.
A three‑star recruit who committed to Kentucky in June 2024, Smith chose the Wildcats over Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern after standout seasons at Walnut Grove High School, where he excelled in both football and basketball. teammates recall his relentless drive and the moniker ‘Big Happ’ that appeared on his roster alongside his full name.
Beyond athletics, Smith nurtured ambitions of launching his own food business after his playing days, often quoting the piece of advice that ‘you are what you believe.’ He is survived by his parents and six siblings, who have been met with an outpouring of support from the university community.
The University of Kentucky and the Wildcats coaching staff issued a joint statement expressing their deepest condolences to Smith’s family, friends and teammates, promising to honor his memory through continued dedication to the program and to the values he embodied.
