A New Chapter for the Crusaders
St. Henry District High School announced this week that Kes Murphy will serve as the head coach of the girls basketball program beginning with the 2026‑2027 campaign. The hiring comes after Murphy’s impressive track record, which includes a 309‑139 record over 15 seasons and a state championship with Holy Cross in 2015.
Murphy’s journey in Kentucky basketball has been marked by steady growth. At Notre Dame Academy, he captured six district titles in seven years and guided the Pandas to a 22‑8 record in his final season, finishing as Ninth Region runners‑up.
He succeeds Dan Trame, who compiled a 31‑30 record over two seasons at St. Henry. Trame’s departure follows a breakthrough year for the Crusaders, who finished 17‑13 — their best mark since the 2022‑23 season — and secured victories over longtime rivals, including a win over Dixie Heights after a 12‑year drought.
The team’s recent successes also include capturing the Mercer Tourism Christmas Clash and securing a spot in the Ninth Region tournament for the fifth consecutive year. Key returners such as Joey Powers, Audrey Pieczonka, Anna Bain, Caroline Brannen and Kenadi Sieg are expected to play pivotal roles as the program looks to build on its momentum.
What Murphy Brings to St. Henry
Beyond his win‑loss record, Murphy is known for emphasizing disciplined defense and a balanced offensive attack. His experience developing under‑class talent was evident when his Notre Dame squads consistently reached the Sweet 16, a trajectory he hopes to replicate with the Crusaders.
The hiring aligns with the school’s broader goal of maintaining competitive athletics while fostering academic excellence. Athletic director Karen Lawson praised Murphy’s commitment to player development and community engagement, noting that his leadership style complements the school’s values.
Fans and alumni alike have responded positively to the announcement, expressing optimism that Murphy’s proven formula will translate into continued success on the court. The upcoming season will be closely watched as the Crusaders aim to extend their streak of regional tournament appearances.
