Early in the game he issued a walk to Carter Jensen and surrendered a run‑scoring single to Isaac Collins, but he quickly recovered, retiring 12 of the next 13 batters he faced.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell praised the performance, describing the pitching as ‘on cruise control’ after the first inning and noting that Gausman’s focus on avoiding ankle stiffness had helped him settle into a routine.
Relief efforts were handled by Caleb Thielbar, who gave up two runs in the eighth, but Trent Thornton and Jacob Webb combined to close out the ninth and secure the save.
The outing also carried added significance because the Cubs may need to protect Clay Holmes, who is slated to make his first start since a right fibula fracture on May 15.
