Kevin Kaerwer has rejoined the University of Texas at El Paso men’s basketball staff in July 2026, taking on the role of assistant coach under head coach Joe Golding.
His return marks the second time he has served the Miners, having previously contributed from 2021 through 2025 and helped the program achieve three winning seasons in four years.
A Championship pedigree
During the 2025‑26 season he was associate head coach at Langston University, guiding the team to a 29‑8 record and a runner‑up finish in the NAIA National Championship final.
That experience follows a strong tenure at UTEP that included a 20‑win campaign in 2021‑22, the first such season for the program since 2014‑15, and a 2024 CUSA Tournament Championship under Golding.
From Player to Coach
Kaerwer’s basketball journey began at Central College in Pella, Iowa, where he earned All‑IIAC honors and served as team captain in his senior year before launching a coaching career that started as a graduate assistant at Angelo State University.
His early work at Angelo State contributed to two Sweet 16 appearances in NCAA Division II and a 53‑12 record, setting the stage for his promotion to assistant coach and later a return to UTEP.
Looking Ahead
With UTEP transitioning to the Mountain West Conference for the 2026‑27 season, Kaerwer will be part of the coaching staff tasked with building on the program’s recent successes and aiming for new milestones.
