South Carolina's baseball program is on the brink of a leadership change as the university prepares to hire Kevin Schnall, the architect of Coastal Carolina's recent rise in college baseball, to replace interim coach Monte Lee.
Schnall's résumé reads like a success story: within two seasons he guided the Chanticleers to the College World Series championship round, captured both the regular‑season and tournament titles of their conference, and compiled a nation‑leading 56 wins, including a 26‑game winning streak.
A Storied Coaching Journey
Before stepping into the head‑coach role, Schnall spent two decades as an assistant at Coastal Carolina, where he also earned conference player‑of‑the‑year honors as a catcher. His deep familiarity with the program's culture and talent pipeline has been credited as a key factor in the team's rapid ascent.
Lee, who has been serving as interim coach, previously held similar positions at Clemson and the College of Charleston, stepping in after Paul Mainieri's brief stint that yielded the program's lowest SEC performance in recent memory.
Mainieri, who departed after just 1.5 seasons, was earning $1.3 million annually. Schnall's anticipated compensation is expected to exceed that figure, reportedly roughly three times his previous $500,000 salary at Coastal Carolina.
Board Approval and Financial Details
The university's Board of Trustees must give the green light before an official announcement can be made. A meeting scheduled for 4 p.m. on Wednesday will address the contract terms, with the board poised to endorse a deal that reflects the program's new ambitions.
If approved, the agreement will mark a significant financial commitment to the baseball program, underscoring the administration's belief that Schnall can translate his proven success into sustained competitiveness within the SEC.
The move also signals a broader strategy to elevate South Carolina's baseball profile, leveraging Schnall's recruiting networks and his deep ties to the Palmetto State's high‑school talent pool.
