A Strategic Addition to the Tar Heels
Kevin Thomas, a 6-foot-7 wing from Florida, revealed his commitment to the University of North Carolina on Wednesday, May 13, via an Instagram post that sparked excitement among Tar Heels fans.
The four-star prospect had originally pledged to Louisiana State, but after the firing of LSU coach Matt McMahon, Thomas reopened his recruitment and chose UNC, citing the program’s trajectory and the opportunity to play under a new staff.
During his senior season at Weston Sagemont Prep, Thomas averaged 15.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2 steals per game, earning multiple player-of-the-year accolades in the state. His size, athleticism and perimeter shooting make him a versatile defensive piece capable of guarding multiple positions.
Former LSU coach Matt McMahon described Thomas as “an athletic wing who brings perimeter scoring and explosiveness,” a sentiment echoed by analysts who project Thomas as a potential spark off the bench.
Coach Hubert Davis and his staff anticipate Thomas will contribute depth on the wing, though immediate heavy minutes are not guaranteed. The team expects to rely on players such as Terrence Brown, Matt Able and Neoklis Avdalas for the bulk of perimeter responsibilities.
The commitment underscores UNC’s continued ability to attract top talent from across the country, reinforcing the Tar Heels’ recruiting momentum heading into the 2026 season.
