A Rocky Start for VMI Women's Soccer
The VMI Keydets opened the 2026 campaign on the road, facing George Mason in Fairfax, Virginia. Despite a promising first half that saw them up 1-0, the team could not hold the lead.
Freshman forward Jaleesa Eichel broke through with a beautifully struck free kick that marked her first collegiate goal and the program’s opening tally of the season.
Second‑Half Surge by the Patriots
After halftime the Patriots shifted momentum, and Keira Jeffries equalised in the 71st minute with a clinical finish. Ten minutes later Mia Casciani struck the decisive blow, putting George Mason ahead 2-1.
The visitors struggled to respond, and two late goals in the final six minutes stretched the margin to 4-1. VMI’s defense was tested repeatedly, but goalkeeper Maren Ryberg kept the score respectable with eight saves and a rare assist on a defensive clearance.
Despite the loss, the Keydets logged three shots, with Eichel, Ella Peterson and Madeline Karsonovich each testing the opposition. The match, played at George Mason Stadium, offered a glimpse of young talent and the challenges ahead for the program.
