Tennessee’s women’s basketball program has undergone a whirlwind transformation in recent weeks, as head coach Kim Caldwell orchestrated a complete rebuild of the roster in just 25 days.
The rapid overhaul brought in 13 newcomers via the transfer portal, complemented by a high‑school signee, reshaping the team’s identity before the upcoming season.
The New Faces
Among the most anticipated additions is Naomi White, who transferred from Northern Arizona where she earned 2026 Big Sky Freshman of the Year honors. Caldwell describes her as an amazing character and a top‑scoring freshman who will anchor the team’s future.
Another cornerstone is veteran Kaylene Smikle, an elite scorer who joins the Lady Vols after a standout college career. Her ability to create and convert shots makes her a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses.
Fortifying the Perimeter
Caldwell’s focus on perimeter defense led to the recruitment of proven shot‑blockers and lockdown guards, including Jada Eads and Kennedy Fauntleroy, who were sought after for their Samara Spencer‑like playmaking.
The coaching staff also bolstered shooting depth with Avery Mills, Rylie Theuerkauf and the sharpshooting duo of Naomi White and Gabby Minus, who signed in November and remained committed despite the exodus.
Veteran Presence and Size
Harper Peterson and Riley Makalusky provide forward versatility, stretching the floor while delivering defensive intensity, while Harissoum Coulibaly and Irene Oboavwoduo add size and rebounding to the backcourt.
Texas transfer Aaliyah Moore, despite a history of knee issues, is expected to be fully healthy by the start of practice, adding another layer of depth.
Looking Ahead
With a blend of fresh talent, experienced veterans and a fortified defensive identity, the Lady Vols hope to turn last season’s defensive shortcomings into a competitive edge. The upcoming schedule will test the cohesion of a squad assembled in record time, but early indications suggest a team ready to contend.
