The Professional Women’s Hockey League announced that its newest franchise in Las Vegas has selected Kim Weiss as its head coach for the upcoming season.
A milestone for women’s hockey
Weiss, 37, arrives after a stint as an assistant with the Colorado Eagles in the American Hockey League, bringing a blend of NHL‑AHL experience and a track record of player development.
Her move marks a significant step in the league’s expansion, as she becomes the fourth coach the PWHL has appointed for the next cycle, underscoring the league’s commitment to experienced leadership.
Weiss will reunite with Las Vegas general manager Dominique DiDia, a former Trinity College teammate, adding a personal connection that could shape the team’s culture.
DiDia praised Weiss for her ability to develop players and build strong team cultures, noting that her background includes being only the second woman to serve as a full‑time assistant in the NHL or AHL.
Beyond her recent role, Weiss made history by becoming the first woman to coach a men’s team at the Division III level at Trinity College, a milestone that highlighted her coaching acumen early in her career.
The league’s growth is also evident in its recent addition of four new franchises, swelling the total to twelve teams for the upcoming season, a move that reflects the rising profile of women’s professional hockey.
The hiring of Weiss comes just two days before the league’s draft in Detroit, a timing that underscores the urgency and excitement surrounding the upcoming roster constructions.
