King County Metro’s Inclusivity Drive Ahead of 2026 World Cup in Seattle

Community partnerships and youth transportation initiatives aim to make the tournament accessible and culturally vibrant

A community‑focused World Cup

King County Metro is collaborating with community groups to promote inclusivity and cultural connections during Seattle’s upcoming World Cup matches in 2026. Through its Inclusivity Initiative, Metro seeks to demonstrate the importance of transit operations and community fairness in public service while fostering long‑term relationships between the agency and the neighborhoods it serves.

The agency has partnered with twelve local organizations, including eleven that received microgrants to host a variety of events such as community watch parties, cultural discussions, and neighborhood soccer tournaments. One highlight is the “Can I Kick it? Black Brilliance in Motion” gathering at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute, where families meet soccer heroes, share meals, and celebrate the tournament’s spirit.

Youth access and transportation

Metro is providing transportation for roughly 200 young fans to attend the first Seattle match, where Egypt will face Belgium. In addition, sponsors have pledged 1,400 match‑day tickets to youth soccer enthusiasts, with Metro’s shuttle service ensuring that transportation does not become a barrier to participation. King County Executive Girmay Zahilay emphasized the need for safe, easy shuttle access, stating that it is essential for youth to attend matches without hurdles.

Cultural celebrations and partnership

Beyond the games, Metro’s initiative aims to strengthen the bond between the transit provider and the community, creating a foundation for continued collaboration and growth. Community leaders such as De’Sean Quinn, Ernest Kandilige, Katie B. Wilson, and Executive Zahilay have been instrumental in shaping these efforts, which blend sport, culture, and equitable access for all Seattle residents.
