A New Chapter for an HBCU Star
KJ White, a standout outfielder from Southern University, has inked a deal with the Athletics as an undrafted free agent, capping a senior season that placed him among the nation’s most productive hitters.
Coach Chris Crenshaw highlighted White’s professionalism and work ethic, noting that the player’s approach to the game set a standard for teammates and exemplified the discipline required at the next level.
White’s statistical dominance was evident: he posted a .421 batting average, ranked third nationally, and finished with a .682 slugging percentage, while also earning Southwestern Athletic Conference Hitter of the Year honors and a spot on the First‑Team All‑SWAC.
His performance helped Southern to a 29‑23 overall record and a 20‑7 mark in the SWAC, marking the program’s most wins under Crenshaw and the second consecutive year a Southern player has secured an MLB opportunity.
The move follows the recent draft of outfielder Cardell Thibodeaux by the San Diego Padres, underscoring a pipeline of talent from the university to the majors and reinforcing the program’s growing influence on professional baseball.
