College football analyst Joel Klatt has released his early projection for the 2026 playoff, insisting that the Alabama Crimson Tide will finish the regular season at 10‑2 and clinch the final at‑large berth.
Despite a first‑year quarterback and a roster reshaped by the transfer portal and the NFL draft, Klatt believes Alabama’s defense will remain among the nation’s elite, especially in the secondary.
The analyst expects the Tide to open the season with a five‑game winning streak before a difficult stretch that includes matchups against Georgia, Tennessee, Texas A&M and LSU, games he predicts will produce Alabama’s two losses.
Klatt points to the strength of the non‑conference schedule, noting that a loss to a top‑ten opponent early in the year could actually bolster the team’s résumé in the eyes of the selection committee.
Projected Playoff Matchup
When the final bracket is released, Alabama is slated to be the No. 11 seed and will meet No. 6 Indiana in the Rose Bowl, a rematch that Klatt says could end in a similar fashion to the previous meeting, with Indiana expected to dominate again.
The projection also highlights the committee’s tendency to favor teams with a strong brand and a 10‑2 record over those with a 9‑3 record, even when the latter have comparable win totals.
If the forecast holds, the Crimson Tide will once again prove that tradition and defensive prowess can outweigh a challenging schedule, keeping Alabama in the conversation for a national title.
