Knoxville Catholic’s head coach Philip Shadowens opened up about a recent recruiting violation that triggered a Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association investigation.
A Mistake, Not a Pattern
Shadowens described the incident as “just one mistake,” emphasizing that the school holds itself to a higher standard than many programs in East Tennessee.
The violation resulted in a two‑year probation and a postseason ban for the 2026 season, along with a $2,000 fine, reduced offseason practice days and a suspension for the assistant coach involved.
Staff Preparedness and Rule Adherence
He noted that his staff is very careful about following the regulations and that they are well‑versed in the new tiered system the TSSAA proposed for recruiting infractions.
Shadowens said he does not plan to add extra training protocols for communicating with transferring student‑athletes, believing that clear expectations and consistent enforcement are sufficient.
Looking Ahead
Despite the penalties, Shadowens remains confident that the team will emerge stronger, focusing on building chemistry and adhering to the higher standards he set for the program.
The players were informed of the self‑imposed postseason ban and expressed disappointment, but they have rallied around the goal of returning to competition with renewed focus.
