Koerner's Departure Marks End of an Era
After six years at the helm of Newman Central Catholic High School’s baseball program, veteran coach Kenny Koerner announced his resignation, citing a desire to devote more time to his three granddaughters.
Koerner’s tenure was marked by a rapid ascent of the Comets, who captured three state trophies, placed third in 2023 and fourth in both 2024 and 2025, and broke new ground by advancing to the IHSA Elite Eight on five separate occasions, with State Finals appearances in each of the last three years. The team’s 138‑44‑2 record over that span reflects a consistency that few programs achieve.
A Legacy of Growth
The school’s climb to Class 3A for the 2026 season was a direct result of those accomplishments, a move that underscored the program’s growing competitiveness. Beyond the scoreboard, Koerner oversaw the creation of the Sterling Sharks travel baseball initiative in 2009, expanding the program to seven teams through 2016, and later refined the school’s facilities to meet the standards of a modern baseball powerhouse.
Colleagues, parents, and players alike praised his collaborative approach, noting that the supportive environment he cultivated extended from the dugout to the stands. His leadership not only elevated the team’s performance but also strengthened community ties, a factor that many believe will be difficult to replicate.
In his resignation letter, Koerner emphasized that the decision was personal rather than professional, a sentiment that resonates with many who have watched him balance a demanding coaching schedule with family life for nearly two decades. His next chapter will be spent closer to home, cherishing moments with the grandchildren who inspired his departure.
