KT Harrell has been named assistant coach at the University of Michigan, a move that caps a rapid rise for the former Wolverines standout who guided the program to the 2026 NCAA national championship.
His appointment follows a season in which Michigan posted a program‑record 37 victories, captured both the Big Ten Tournament and regular‑season titles, and secured the school’s first national championship since 1989.
From Player to Coach: A Journey Through the Ranks
Before arriving in Ann Arbor, Harrell honed his craft at Florida Atlantic, where he served two seasons as Director of Basketball Operations and helped the Owls compile a 60‑13 record, win the 2023 Conference USA championship and reach back‑to‑back NCAA tournaments.
He then moved to Auburn, where as a graduate assistant under Bruce Pearl he contributed to a 41‑20 season that included the 2022 SEC regular‑season crown.
A Playing résumé That Stands Apart
Harrell’s playing résumé is equally impressive. He scored 1,196 points in two seasons at Auburn, led the SEC in scoring as a senior and earned All‑SEC Second Team honors. After college he played professionally in Belgium, Italy and Turkey, capturing the 2015‑16 Turkish Federation Cup and being named MVP of the 2016‑17 Italian Cup.
Since joining Michigan’s staff, Harrell has been credited with helping the Wolverines improve from eight wins to a 27‑10 record in his first year, and he continues to shape a roster that finished 19‑1 in Big Ten play and earned a No. 1 NCAA seed.
A New Chapter for Michigan Basketball
The Wolverines, now enjoying a 64‑13 record under Harrell’s influence, are poised to sustain their momentum as they look toward future championships, with Harrell playing a central role in the program’s next chapter.
