Kyle Buggs, a junior at Smithfield High School, is carving his own path in the world of high school sports, following a lineage that stretches back to his grandfather, Joe Buggs, who once steered the Green Bay Packers' football program for a decade.
A Family's Athletic Legacy
His father, Kermit Buggs, serves as the offensive coordinator at Smithfield High, while his mother’s side of the family has long been intertwined with competitive athletics. Initially, Kyle devoted himself to football, but the sudden passing of his grandfather prompted him to return to baseball, the sport his grandfather loved most.
The transition was not merely sentimental; it was a promise to honor a dying wish. In his first high school baseball game, Kyle launched a three‑run home run that sent a ripple of pride through his family and teammates, marking a symbolic fulfillment of that commitment.
Now, Kyle balances his football pursuits with a renewed passion for baseball, aiming to continue both at the collegiate level. He says the rhythm of the bat and the camaraderie of the team have reignited a love for the game that had lain dormant.
Under the guidance of head baseball coach Nick Tugwell, the Packers are building a strong foundation for the future. Sophomore Tanner Brobst and freshman Luke Waycaster are emerging as key hitters, while senior Nick Gaspar has already secured a college spot at Chowan University, signaling a promising pipeline of talent.
