Kyle Busch, the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series champion, will not compete this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Coca‑Cola 600 after being hospitalized following a severe illness. His family issued a statement on May 21 confirming the hospitalization and requesting privacy as he focuses on recovery.
The illness forced Busch to sit out all scheduled events over the Memorial Day weekend, including the Cup Series race on Sunday and the preceding NASCAR Truck Series event on Friday. The 41‑year‑old driver had been slated to take the wheel of his No. 8 car for both appearances.
Richard Childress Racing, the organization that fields Busch’s No. 8 entry, released a brief statement expressing support for the driver and wishing him a swift recovery. The team noted that Austin Hill will step in to drive the car in the Coca‑Cola 600.
A veteran’s legacy
Busch’s career includes 234 wins across NASCAR’s three national divisions, with 63 victories in the premier Cup Series. His dominance has made him one of the most recognizable figures in modern stock car racing, and his absence will be felt throughout the holiday weekend.
