Kyle Makaric Joins Erie Otters as Assistant Coach

A seasoned mentor brings championship pedigree to the OHL franchise

The Erie Otters have named Kyle Makaric as their newest Assistant Coach, a move that underscores the club’s intent to bolster its bench with proven leadership and tactical acumen.

Coaching pedigree

Makaric, 37, arrives from a stint as an Assistant Coach with the Saginaw Spirit, where he helped shape a top‑five power play in the OHL. His career also features two Central Canada Hockey League championships as head coach of the Ottawa Jr. Senators and a 2023 Coach of the Year honor in that league.

Beyond the OHL, Makaric has guided a variety of programs, including the Windsor Jr. Spitfires AAA, the University of Windsor, the Chatham Maroons and the Leamington Flyers. He also served as an assistant with Canada East at the World Junior ‘A’ Championship, gaining international exposure to elite junior talent.

General Manager Dave Brown praised the hire, emphasizing Makaric’s blend of experience and innovative approach. "His track record of developing players and elevating team performance aligns perfectly with our vision," Brown said in the announcement.

Head Coach Kris Mallette added his own commendation, highlighting Makaric’s work ethic and deep hockey knowledge. "We’re excited to have a coach who not only understands the game at a high level but also brings a relentless drive to the locker room," Mallette remarked.

Makaric will oversee the Otters’ forwards and coordinate the team’s power‑play strategies, a role that promises to inject fresh ideas into the club’s offensive schemes. The organization believes his arrival will help sustain competitive momentum as the Otters aim for a deep playoff run.
