L.J. Cason, a point guard who spent two seasons with the Michigan Wolverines, announced his entry into the transfer portal on July 20, setting the stage for a new chapter in his collegiate career.
During his freshman year, Cason appeared in all 30 games, logging 4.3 points, 1.4 rebounds and one assist per game in just 11.8 minutes of action. A year later, he stepped up to 8.4 points, 2.4 assists and 1.9 rebounds while playing 18.6 minutes per contest, only to see his season cut short by a torn ACL.
A Strategic Shift for the Wolverines
With Cason’s departure, Michigan must now rethink the point guard slot heading into the 2026‑27 campaign. The coaching staff has already named Elliot Cadeau as the starter, while prospects such as Trey McKenney, Brandon McCoy Jr. and Joseph Hartman are expected to see increased minutes.
Cadeau, who has been locked in as the team’s primary floor general, brings a different skill set that the staff hopes will compensate for the loss of Cason’s scoring punch and playmaking depth.
The transition also reflects a broader trend of roster reshaping in college basketball, where injuries and transfer decisions frequently reshape team dynamics before a new season begins.
