A Legacy Celebrated
The Lackawanna Football Conference gathered this week for its 17th annual media day, an event that now carries the name of one of its most revered figures. The ceremony paid tribute to Stan Kucharski, a former coach and mentor whose influence helped shape the conference’s rich tradition of championship success.
Kucharski’s journey in football spans decades, from a standout playing career at Archbald High School and Bloomsburg University — where he later earned a place in the school’s Hall of Fame — to a distinguished coaching tenure that included stints at Scranton Prep, Mid Valley and Wallenpaupack. Over 123 career victories, three Suburban Conference titles in 1993, 1996 and 1997, and a term as president of the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association in 2007 underscore his impact on the sport.
The media day also served as a platform to spotlight emerging talent from District 2, highlighted by Isaac Ryon’s record‑setting season in which he amassed 2,876 rushing yards and 49 touchdowns, establishing new PIAA benchmarks. Teams such as Lackawanna Trail, which boasts fifteen District 2 championships and ten conference division titles, continue to build on a legacy of excellence that Kucharski helped foster.
Beyond individual achievements, the conference’s ongoing success is reflected in its teams’ recent district championship run, with North Pocono, Lakeland and Lackawanna Trail all securing titles last fall. The event’s renaming to the Lackawanna Football Conference Stan Kucharski Media Day stands as a testament to his enduring role in promoting athletes and coaches from the region.
